The Institute was established on November 24, 1995 and it acts under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The Institute is affiliated to Jain University, Bangalore and is recognized by University Grant Commission. National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology (NIANP) offers Ph. D.

The institute is located at Bengaluru, on Hosur Road (NH7) about 8 kms from city railway station and Majestic bus station as well as 45 kms from airport.
